This bid-build-finance project involved the construction of 35 bridge structures connecting I-4 to the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway. The bridges were constructed using precast segmental construction and precast bulb tee beams for the bridge decks, which were founded on drilled shafts. The majority of the work was completed in a single phase, with tie-ins to I-4 and the expressway executed in four minor phases.
The new roadway design provides exclusive truck lanes that offer direct access to the Port of Tampa, effectively removing heavy truck traffic from local roads in Ybor City, one of only two national historic districts in Florida. This not only improves traffic flow but also helps preserve the historic character of Ybor City.
