Description

Our team provided engineering design services for Missouri American Water in St. Louis, Missouri, focusing on a significant upgrade to the intake pump station at their North Water Treatment Plant. This project included the design of new architectural, mechanical, and electrical systems.

Key features of the project:

  • Electrical System Upgrades: Replacement of aging switchgear and the installation of four variable frequency drives (VFD) with a bypass for the intake pumps. Two 300 hp vertical turbine pump motors were also replaced with new inverter duty motors.
  • New Intake Building: Design and specification of a prefabricated, precast concrete building to house the 480V switchgear, VFDs, and PLC/SCADA cabinet. The building was engineered to withstand wind forces up to 180 mph.
  • Electrical Design Modifications: Modifications to the existing overhead 4160-volt distribution system, including redundant overhead taps and a transition to underground to supply primary switches. The design also involved testing and relocating existing 5 kV primary switches and pad-mounted transformers to supply the new switchboard. The 480V switchgear was designed with a main-tie-main configuration.
